Washington Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg, who had announced his retirement, has had a setback in his plans.먹튀검증
‘USA Today’ quoted an anonymous source on the 8th (Korean time) and reported that Strasberg’s retirement plan was canceled after 14 days.
Strasburg previously agreed with his team, the Nationals, to hold his retirement ceremony at the National Spark on Saturday local time. The Nationals even planned to retire his uniform in 2024.
However, this plan was suddenly canceled. This is the result of the Nationals suddenly reversing its position.
Strasburg is currently in the fourth year of a seven-year, $245 million contract. He still needs to receive an additional $105 million in annual salary, which will be paid in installments through 2029.
Strasburg, who contributed to winning the 2019 World Series, has struggled with injuries since signing the contract.
Since signing his contract, he has pitched just 31 1/3 innings in eight games. His last appearance was on June 9, 2022, when he gave up 7 runs in 4 2/3 innings in an away game against the Miami Marlins.
In 2021, he underwent surgery to treat thoracic outlet syndrome, but his condition did not improve. Due to his continued injuries, he eventually chose to retire from active duty.
During this process, he reportedly agreed to receive the entire remaining contract with the Nationals. Prince Fielder, who previously chose to retire in a similar situation while still remaining on his contract, also received all remaining contract guarantees.
However, according to USA Today, the Nationals team informed the players of their intention to unilaterally terminate the agreement without any special explanation.
Although the reason was not explained, it can be assumed that the issue of paying the remaining contract was ultimately the biggest obstacle.
Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said in a recent interview with local media, “He signed a seven-year contract, and there are still 3.5 years left. He is scheduled to receive salary for the remainder of his term until he makes a decision about his future.”
The biggest reason why the situation is different from Fielder is insurance. At the time, the Texas Rangers had insurance on Fielder’s contract, so they placed him on the 60-day injured list and received pay from the insurance company for a while.
However, in Strasburg’s case, it was reported that he was not insured. It is interpreted that the Nationals team wants to give up at least part of the remaining contract even if he retires.
